For young moms, having any form of “me-time” can feel like a luxury, especially because being a mother is not something that one can pause or take a break from. Balancing work and school schedules, planning nightly dinners, and constantly doing endless laundry can take a toll, which is why cultivating some time alone can be beneficial and healthy for young parents.
It’s essential to take the opportunity to engage in personal interests and simple activities to reset and promote self-care. Having such a time all to yourself can include having a partner or grandparents take care of the children for an evening, allowing you to focus on yourself completely.
Although being a mother is not something you can mentally turn away from, practicing realistic and affordable me-time activities when the right time presents itself can help you reconnect with who you were before motherhood and how that can strengthen who you are now. Being connected to your own self can provide you with a more present state of being, which also means being present for your family.
Having this me-time as a mother isn’t selfish, but a necessity. It’s okay for moms to need a break, and reconnecting with oneself is something that needs to be practiced with patience and dedication. These four ideas will focus on different ideas to reconnect with who you are as a young adult, not just a mother. A present mother is a parent who balances their motherly duties as well as their own personal interests.
Engage in a Hobby
A way to stay home for the evening yet enjoy some quiet time alone would be to pick up on hobbies or tasks that have been put on pause. Taking the time to dip into your creative side can nourish your mind while also reducing stress and welcoming emotional well-being.
- Drawing and Painting: Anyone can be an artist, so don’t expect to create Da Vinci or Monet paintings from your living room in one hour. Consider bringing out an old sketchbook with some coloring pencils (you could even borrow them from the kids) and just draw whatever is on your mind. Exploring your thoughts through paper can allow you to think about things that you weren’t expecting to, while also placing your focus on that specific task. Another way to let creativity flow through you would be with painting on paper or canvas, such as these inexpensive ones, which can be a great way to tune into your inner artist without breaking the bank. Any paint can be used, from acrylic to watercolor—whatever may fit your budget.
- Reading: Sometimes, trips to the local bookstores may have caused you to purchase a lot of interesting books that immediately got shelved when you arrived home, but during me-time, they can be read and enjoyed. It can be difficult to find some alone time in the home, especially as a young mother, which is why reading would be a fantastic way to catch up on engaging your imagination in the comfort of your couch or your bed. It can be a fun addition to daily life, and spending a quiet, cozy evening reading can be so invigorating and healthy for the mind and soul.
- Challenge Yourself: Knitting, crocheting, or sewing can be a tedious task for many, but taking the time to patiently engage in following a pattern to create a cute plushy or tailoring some of your old jeans can be a great way to shift your focus to a challenging task. You can visit your local retail store to get yourself set up with simple beginner kits, or use kits such as these to inspire you!
Finding Stillness in Movement
Whether it’s hiking at your local regional park or walking a few laps around your community park, select an outlet involving the great outdoors that will provide you with 30 minutes to an hour of movement for the body.
- Taking a Walk: Maybe there’s been a local regional park you’ve been meaning to check out, or a community park that’s been on your mind. Giving yourself some time to go on a solo walk can help you clear your mind, while also being great for your health. Even simple 30-minute walks can do so much for you, such as “…increase energy levels, reduce stress and tension, and even strengthen your bones and muscles” (Mayo Clinic).
The best way to get started with solo walks is to invest in cozy outfits, such as leggings and sweats. Something very important to have is great-fitting shoes, which can come in a variety of different brands and shapes; it is up to you to try on and decide what you feel best in. Personally, as a hiker, I use shoes such as some Nike runners (they are unisex) to get my steps in while being comfortable.
After having your outfits ready, I suggest researching different parks in your area that are accessible to you. Once you select your local park, it’s great to download a free app such as the StepsApp to start tracking your steps and set timely goals that work for you. Everyone starts at a different pace, so decide on the goals that are attainable and healthy for you.
Nourishing Personal Connections
- Prioritizing Friendships: Being a busy mom can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Perhaps you reminisce on the times you used to spend with your closest friends before you became a mom, and miss the feeling of freedom that came with those memories. Although balancing life as a young mom can occupy most of your time, it doesn’t mean you should be alone throughout your journey of raising little ones. Moms deserve friendships and meaningful connections outside of their family that help them grow as individuals and as adults.
- Reaching Out: It’s essential to socialize with others, and science backs that up. A review of 38 studies found that “adult friendships, especially high-quality ones that provide social support and companionship, significantly predict well-being and can protect against mental health issues such as depression and anxiety—and those benefits persist across the life span” (APA Monitor). Although it can feel a little scary to reach out to old friends, it’s important to think about how many new and wonderful memories you can make. Maybe you’ve had a high school or college friend that you haven’t talked to in months or years, and every day is a great opportunity to send them a polite hello.
- Making New Friends: Many young moms may be on the same boat as you, and some may be just as nervous to make new connections. As a mom, various places present themselves as an opportunity to connect with other adults, such as the children’s schools, weekend trips to the local park, or even in overlooked places, such as on the occasional family trip to the city zoo or aquarium. No matter how you may feel about being the first to initiate a conversation with fellow young moms, it’s good to keep in mind the concept of the moms understanding exactly everything you are going through. Motherhood doesn’t have to be isolating, and sharing experiences can strengthen bonds and connections with others.
Have these moments of prioritizing yourself to reconnect with old friends and creating new ones as a way to ground yourself into who you used to be, while also moving forward with who you are now. Both methods of connecting with others are realistic, but they do require a little bit of courage to begin the conversation.
Re-Visiting Your Favorite Spots
You might reflect on the times you used to be free to spend your whole afternoon at the city library, enjoying every book that would come your way, or maybe you still daydream about that cappuccino you would enjoy at your local coffee shop while watching a movie on your laptop. The moments that had brought you such comfort haven’t been revisited in a long time, and you wish you could go back to living in them.
A way to realistically bring back such experiences would be to make a list of places you would love to visit and revisit alone, and narrow them down from there in terms of your availability. You deserve to go out and have fun, while also being mindful of how you spend your time.
- A Local Coffee Shop Afternoon: Visiting a coffee shop can be an important moment to be provided with a much-needed break, as well as allowing you to reconnect with yourself. Consider packing a tote bag with your laptop, a journal, headphones, and cute pens you’ve been meaning to try out. As it can be challenging to find alone time as a mom, allowing yourself to spend an afternoon at a coffee shop can help you watch a movie you’ve been meaning to from the comfort of your own laptop, or even journal for a few minutes.
Picture yourself ordering that much-needed tasty caffeine boost, alongside your favorite pastry, while relishing in the stillness of the moment. Whether you watch a movie or do some journaling, be present and mindful of the time provided for self-connection and reflection.
Consider making your own journaling prompts and responding to them, or research prompts such as some presented here, for further guidance and ideas. Sitting down to process your own thoughts can be beneficial on so many levels, but doing it for yourself is the main priority. A mother connected to her own sense of self can create stronger bonds with her family, while allowing space for herself to be in tune with her individuality. - Visiting a City Library: A trip to the library with your little ones may be a task that can feel overwhelming, as it comes with managing the activities they participate in at the library, putting back all the books they grab, and keeping them entertained. However, if you have to consider just taking yourself to the library to enjoy all of its amenities and various books you’ve been meaning to check out, this trip should feel like a breeze in comparison.
After researching a library you’ve been meaning to visit alone, whether it’s a big library in the city or a smaller, local one, keep in mind some books you’ve been hoping to get. I use Goodreads to research the next books that may interest me, although it’s important to note that your book selection and its quality are determined by you, rather than various reviews that you may see on the platform.
Libraries provide you with a quiet space to focus and free access to various books and technology. It’s best to check the library website for any upcoming events you may be interested in, too, while being able to plan your solo evening with certain events in mind. The positive impact that a library can bring to you is endless. In a survey, “73% of respondents in lower-income ZIP codes reported that their library use positively affects their feeling ‘that there are people in their lives who really care about them,’ compared to 48% in higher-income areas” (Penn Today). Sticking to a budget-friendly outing while also enjoying all of its benefits can be enough to enrich your personal growth without breaking the bank. Consider checking out some cool books, magazines, and even some movies.
Comfort is key, so make sure to do what feels best for you when visiting places alone, as it can be just as fun as if you were to visit them with your family. Don’t shy away from new experiences.
Go Reset!
Motherhood is a lifelong role, but it doesn’t have to be one where you sacrifice your own sense of self to show up for family. It’s important to show up for yourself just as much, and taking time for yourself as a young mom is not selfish, but rather, it is an act of care that benefits yourself and the security of your family. A present mom is an active mom in her children’s lives.
Choosing realistic and affordable ways to spend your evenings allows you to reconnect with yourself, while also nourishing the adult you were before becoming a mother. It’s necessary to establish a connection with your past self and your present self to move forward. A few hours of me-time a week can be all you need to fill your cup, reconnect with yourself, and reinforce the idea that caring for yourself is just as important as caring for others.
