Every young mother deserves the opportunity to feel seen, valued, and supported, and help can come in many forms. Although motherhood can bring so much joy, it may also bring uncertainty, especially during the holiday season. At South Project, we want to ensure that mothers and their little ones receive the care they need with our holiday Donation Drive. As we enter the season of giving, our goal is to support mothers and discuss the impact a generous donation can have. Even a single contribution, such as a pack of diapers or cozy pajamas for a child, can positively impact a mother’s life this holiday season.

  1. Why Your Donations Matter This Holiday Season

Although the holidays are a wonderful time to share with family, for mothers it can be even more stressful and overwhelming. “While nearly all parents polled say that the holidays are generally a happy time for their family, one in six rate their stress level as high during the holiday season – with nearly twice as many mothers experiencing high stress as fathers” (Mott Poll Report, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital). The pressure to provide for children during this time of year can be overwhelming, especially when tasks like gift shopping, party planning, and event hosting pile on to other responsibilities.

Through the Donation Drive at South Project, we aim to ease burdens while creating a safe, healthy space for mothers and their families. Every child deserves happy holiday memories, no matter the financial situation their parents are in. Creating that sense of normalcy during difficult times will allow them to avoid feeling alienated from their peers, helping create a comfortable space for children to grow up in. Even the simple act of donating a children’s toy can be the highlight, and in some cases, the only gift a child may receive on Christmas or any other holiday. Mothers deserve self-care items too, such as journals, candles, personal hygiene items, and clothing. When a mother feels supported and confident, her family thrives as well!

  1. How Specific Donations Make a Difference
  • Diapers and Formula: The most necessary items a baby can be provided with are diapers and formula, which are something that young mothers struggle with due to inflation. “BabyCenter recently added up all of the commonly purchased items and expenses for a baby’s first year and found that they come to $20,745” (Bykofsky, BabyCenter). The cost of essentials amounts to what a part-time job could pay in one whole year! Donating to the holiday Donation Drive would greatly improve the quality of life for families in need, which would allow them to fund the other aspects of parenthood.
  • Clothing Items: Donating baby, toddler, and children’s clothing can help children stay warm during the winter months of the year. As clothing falls under the category of basic needs, it should be easy to agree on the fact that clean and cozy clothing is most appropriate for young ones, especially during such colder months.
  • Toys, Books & Entertainment: Children should be able to have fun and explore their personal interests through the collection of books and toys, which also help them grow and teach them how to interact with the world and their peers. Gifting children with such items can create happy and hopeful holiday memories!
  • Self-Care Items for Mothers: Moms matter too! Donating journals, clothing, and personal hygiene items is essential. Cultivating gratitude through daily journaling is a form of self-care (among other self-care activities and is a fantastic tool to help young women build their self-esteem and self-worth!
  1. Empowering Young Mothers Through Community Support

Creating a space to support young mothers fosters self-confidence and creates strength not only to uplift but also to support her family. At South Project, we empower women through educational workshops, mentorship, and resources with support. We foster a compassionate, stigma-free environment where mothers can thrive. Every contribution to our Donation Drive helps us reinforce our mission and shows mothers they have a community that stands with them. About “17% of moms with a child under three received no support outside of their spouse or partner, according to a new national survey by Philips Avent and March of Dimes conducted by The Harris Poll” (Tenety, Motherly). Mothers who struggle may not have the support of their families or their partner, which can further make them feel alienated from their friends and peers.

Empathy is important to keep in mind this holiday season. Being empathetic to everyone’s individual situation, while remaining present for them, creates compassion and fosters kindness. Creating a strong community of support through donations doesn’t just strengthen bonds between mothers and their support groups but also provides women with confidence and stability to keep moving forward. Having a support group sometimes requires creating one outside of loved ones, which is where South Project comes in. We are always here for mothers and their families!

We provide various ways to empower mothers:

  • Mentorship Program: We connect young mothers with trained mentors who provide encouragement, support, and guidance. Women can sign up to become a mentor for the South Project, which is a great way to share experiences, offer lifestyle and parental advice, and give educational/personal development tips.
  • Community & Engagement Advice: We frequently host events that raise awareness on issues and challenges that mothers face, network and create a space to form connections, and celebrate individual and group successes.
  • Resource Distribution & Support Groups: We supply young mothers with essential items for their children and themselves. Through the Donative Drive, we expand that need through the holiday seasons! The support groups provide safe spaces to connect and foster resilience through motherhood.
  • Advocacy/Outreach & Educational Workshops: Along with the mentorship programs, we organize educational workshops that equip mothers with skills such as financial literacy, parental skills, and career development.

Providing donations of any sort to South Project directly invests in our movement of empowering women and helps us grow our organization to reach more women and families in need.
